Associate with Winners: Spotlight on the Manitoba Print Industry Association

In Fall 2024, I attended the Manitoba Print Industry Association’s (MPIA’s) Name in Print award ceremony, which recognizes provincial members of the print community who have made significant contributions to the industry. The event also demonstrated what a successful regional print association can look like at its best.

MPIA is a regional association affiliated with the Canadian Printing Industries Association (CPIA). There are regional affiliates in all provinces, as well as an equipment dealers’ association. It is beneficial to participate in industry associations—according to a 2024 Printing United report, respondents affiliated with regional associations reported 46% higher EBITDA than the 2023 S&P Small Cap average for firms in the commercial printing industry.

The Manitoba Print Industry Association is a model for other trade organizations and reinforces the theory that well thoughtout programs encouraging active participation helps associations grow and industries prosper.

A Thriving Organization

MPIA is a vibrant organization led by President Ted Gortemaker and Association Manager Lee-Anne Carter. They are a young, energetic team supported by an active board and several experienced industry veterans. Volunteers contribute their time and skills in areas such as website development, finance, and event organization.

The association actively engages with its network, government contacts, other associations, and suppliers to ensure it provides value to its members.

Innovative Member Services

MPIA’s website serves as an interactive hub for members, offering:

  • Event and training registration and payment services
  • Access to recorded training webinars
  • An active job board for employers and job seekers

These digital tools help reduce administrative tasks, allowing better use of volunteer and administrative time. The association also leverages social media and email marketing to keep members engaged.

Addressing Industry Challenges

MPIA members are united in tackling industry challenges, particularly in recruiting young talent. The association sponsors education and training programs, such as:

  • Press operator certificate courses
  • Software training (Illustrator, InDesign, Excel)
  • Staff recruitment and retention strategies

MPIA’s training programs are cross-sector, meaning other industry associations often participate. Training is either free or available at a modest fee, with non-members able to participate at higher rates.

By actively engaging with provincial representatives, the Manitoba Print Industry Association has succeeded in arranging an investment of over $1 million for graphic arts training programs at Manitoba Institute of Trades and Technology.

Networking & Growth Opportunities

MPIA’s networking events go beyond simple socializing. Each session includes:

  • Industry growth brainstorming
  • Innovation discussions
  • Strategies to enhance MPIA’s member support

In 2025, MPIA plans to expand corporate partnership programs, providing members with discounted products and services.

Securing Government Support

One of MPIA’s biggest achievements is active engagement with provincial and federal government agencies. At one point, provincial representatives even sat on MPIA’s board. This engagement led to a $1 million investment in graphic arts training programs at the Manitoba Institute of Trades and Technology (MITT) over the past decade.

A Model for Trade Organizations

Although Manitoba is one of Canada’s smaller provinces, it has a thriving printing sector serving local, national, and international clients. MPIA stands as a model for other trade associations, reinforcing the idea that well-structured programs encouraging active participation help associations grow and industries prosper.
